Endodontic Treatment
Endodontic treatment is more commonly known as root canal therapy. This dental treatment saves badly infected teeth that would have once required extraction. Infection can attack what is known as the pulp of the tooth. This is the area of the tooth that contains all the blood and nerve tissues which nourish the tooth during its growth and development. The pulp is situated in the root canal of the tooth, hence the name root canal therapy. When the pulp becomes infected, it becomes very painful as the infection attacks the nerve tissues, requiring urgent treatment to relieve the discomfort caused.
Before root canal therapy treatment was developed, the infected tooth required extraction. Nowadays however, the infected pulp of the tooth is carefully removed from the tooth. The root canal is then cleaned, disinfected and finally sealed with a filling to ensure no infection can return. In most cases the procedure does not affect the functionality, long term durability or appearance of the tooth.
