The patients at Designer Dental Studio choose to treat cracked teeth before they break. There is no way to remove a crack, without losing significant healthy tooth structure. Instead, Dr Duval strengthens and supports the tooth, with either a ceramic crown, or ceramic restoration (inlay/onlay). Unlike amalgam, ceramic bonds to the tooth structure, so no further flexing occurs. Although the crack is still present, its progress is halted.
If the crack is significant, a ceramic crown is used and involves the removal of some additional tooth structure. A ceramic restoration (inlay/onlay), does not require any additional tooth structure to be removed. In both cases, the goal is that no further cracking or fracturing occurs.
A patient's exact requirements are assessed on a 'tooth by tooth' basis. It is normal for a combination of ceramic crowns and restorations to be recommended, to achieve optimal dental health.
