If you have been diagnosed with malocclusion (a non-ideal bite), there are usually 3 options for your initial treatment: Please click on the links below to find out more about TMJ / TMD treatment options;
TMJ / TMD Treatment
An occlusal splint is made from clear acrylic. It usually covers your upper teeth only, and is worn primarily at night while you sleep. It fits your teeth like a mouthguard. An occlusal splint cushions your teeth to minimize clenching and grinding at night and prevent further damage to your teeth.
An occlusal splint, worn diligently, will drastically slow the rate of wear to your teeth, due to your non-ideal bite. It's possible that it may alleviate the symptoms associated with TMD, such as headaches, neck tension, jaw pain and jaw joint clicking.
Occlusal splints typically last between 2 and 3 years, although some people can wear through their splint, a lot faster. Compared to other treatments, a splint is a short-term management of your symptoms. Orthotic Therapy is a more appropriate long- term solution.
