As you chew food or grind your teeth, the tooth and the filling material flexes, causing the crack to worsen over time. Eventually the cracks cause part of the tooth to fracture. In addition to this, cracks provide the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. They can cause new decay underneath an existing filling, and when the bacteria reaches the nerve, the nerve can die and become infected.
Designer Dental Studio choose to treat cracked teeth before they break.
There is no way to remove a crack without losing significant healthy tooth structure. Instead, Dr Duval strengthens and supports the tooth, with either a ceramic crown, or ceramic restoration (inlay/onlay). Unlike amalgam, ceramic bonds to the tooth structure, so no further flexing occurs. Although, the crack is still present, its progress is halted.
If the crack is significant, a ceramic crown is used and involves the removal of some additional tooth structure. A ceramic restoration (inlay/onlay) does not require any additional tooth structure to be removed. In both cases, the goal is that no further cracking or fracturing occur.
A patient's exact requirements are assessed on a tooth by tooth basis. It is normal for a combination of ceramic crowns and restorations to be recommended to achieve optimal dental health.
