Where natural teeth are missing, Designer Dental Studio highly recommends tooth replacement to prevent long term dental concerns. Bridges can be a suitable option for a patient with missing teeth.
A dental bridge is a false tooth, known as a pontic, which is fused between two crowns to fill in the area left by the missing tooth. The two crowns holding it in place are attached onto your teeth on each side of the false tooth. This creates the ‘bridge’. Bridges are a permanent tooth replacement option, and are fixed in place. One or more missing teeth can be replaced by a bridge.
The bridge is a far better alternative to a partial denture or having no tooth replacement at all. However, it does have certain disadvantages compared to a dental implant as shown below
| |
Bridges |
Dental Implant |
| Preparation |
This involves removing healthy tooth structure from the two adjacent teeth |
Adjacent teeth are not affected |
| Necessary Appointments |
The process typically takes 2 weeks and you will need temporary crowns while your bridge is manufactured |
Some dental implants can be fitted in one appointment |
| Longevity |
Bridges typically last between 15 and 20 years |
Implants are a lifetime solution |
| Maintenance |
Bridges can prove challenging to floss. |
Implants can be brushed and flossed as normal |
