Ceramic crowns and veneers can greatly enhance the appearance and longevity of your smile. Crowns and veneers are used for both functional and aesthetic reasons. As a method of tooth restoration, significant work may be necessary to restore a tooth to its original glory. Historically, crowns were traditionally made only from gold or stainless steel, but as people have become more conscious of their smiles, and technologies have become more sophisticated, these materials have become less common.
A more popular choice of material for crowns has been Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM). This is made mostly from a combination of metals, except for a thin layer of porcelain covering the surface.
At Designer Dental Studio, we now prefer all-ceramic crowns. The overall appearance of an all-ceramic crown is significantly better than that of a PFM crown and infinitely better than any all-metallic crown available.
PFM crowns also tend to look opaque, as the metal on the inside doesn’t allow any light to show through the tooth. Your natural teeth have a degree of translucency, that just can’t be recreated with a PFM crown.
In terms of strength and appearance, an all-ceramic crown is as natural in appearance as your original tooth, and has been proven to be as strong as PFM crowns, when manufactured and bonded correctly. It is also possible to strengthen a ceramic crown further, without affecting its appearance, by using zirconium, a white metal.
